What a dissertation coach actually does
Most stalled dissertations are not stalled because the student lacks knowledge. They stall because the project is huge, the deadline is distant and every day offers something more urgent. A coach changes the conditions you work in. You have a regular appointment, someone who knows your project in detail and a reason to arrive with pages written.
Inside each session, your coach is part planner, part reader and part sounding board. One week the focus might be breaking a chapter into tasks small enough to start; another week it is reading your draft discussion aloud and asking what you really meant. Over time, coaching dissertation writers is as much about building habits as fixing text, and those habits outlast the project.
Inside a typical session
- Check-in (5 minutes). What got done, what did not and why.
- Feedback (15–20 minutes). Your coach goes through the pages you sent, focusing on the two or three issues that matter most.
- Problem solving (15–20 minutes). Whatever is blocking you: a confusing supervisor comment, a structural knot, a source you cannot interpret.
- Planning (10 minutes). Concrete, achievable goals for the next interval, written down and shared.
Sessions usually run 50 to 60 minutes. The rhythm is flexible; some students start weekly and drop to fortnightly once momentum returns. You can read more about how we schedule and match coaches on our how it works page.
Your coach also keeps short notes after each meeting, so nothing is lost between sessions and patterns become visible. If the same kind of task keeps slipping, such as starting new sections or finishing revisions, that pattern becomes something you work on together rather than a private source of guilt.
Signs coaching might suit you better than a one-off review
- You have reopened the same document many times this month without adding much to it.
- Feedback from your supervisor makes sense in the meeting but feels paralyzing at your desk.
- You write well in bursts, then lose weeks.
- You have a long runway, six months or more, and want support throughout rather than at the end.
If instead you mainly need an expert judgment on a finished chapter, a review through our dissertation help service may be more efficient. Doctoral candidates who want coaching that also covers publications, teaching and career decisions should look at PhD coaching.
Cost, commitment and getting matched
People often ask how much a dissertation coach costs. The honest answer is that it depends on session frequency, how much written feedback you want between meetings and the level of your project. We do not lock you into long contracts; most clients book a block of sessions, review how it is going and continue or pause from there. You can request a quote describing your situation and receive a tailored proposal within a few hours.
We match you with a coach whose research background is close to yours, so they understand your field's conventions. If the fit is not right after the first session, we will change coaches at no extra cost.
Why coaching rather than doing
A coach's success is measured by what you can do on your own by the end. That is why every suggestion comes with the reasoning behind it, and why your coach will ask you to restructure a paragraph rather than restructure it for you. It also means the finished dissertation is entirely yours, which matters at your defense and under your university's rules. Our integrity commitments apply to every session.
What you get
- A recurring video session with the same coach, weekly or fortnightly
- Short, specific goals agreed at the end of every session
- Brief written feedback on the pages you produce between sessions
- A living project plan that is updated as the dissertation evolves
- Messaging support between sessions for quick questions
What we don't do
- Coaching is about your process and your writing; your coach never writes text for you
- It is not therapy, though coaches are understanding about stress and will point you to university support if you need it
- In-depth statistical analysis is handled by a specialist rather than within coaching sessions
