What a good essay review looks at
Free essay checkers are handy for typos and comma splices. What they cannot tell you is whether your argument answers the question, whether your evidence supports your claims, or why a paragraph that feels fine to you would lose a marker's attention. That is the gap our essay review service fills.
Every review covers five areas, weighted according to your own rubric:
| Area | What we check |
|---|---|
| Response to the question | Does the essay do what the command words ask, across the full scope? |
| Argument | Is there a clear position, and does each section advance it? |
| Use of evidence | Are sources relevant, accurately represented and analysed rather than summarised? |
| Structure and flow | Do paragraphs follow a logical order, with signposting a reader can follow? |
| Style and referencing | Is the tone academic, the expression clear and the citation style consistent? |
How essays are graded, and how we use that
Most university marking schemes describe bands rather than checklists. A 2:1 or B-range essay usually shows sound understanding and some analysis; the top band asks for originality, synthesis and confident handling of counterarguments. Knowing where those lines fall is half the battle.
Our reviewers read your draft the way a marker would, with your criteria open beside it. Where the rubric says "critical engagement with the literature", we point to the exact paragraphs that meet it and the ones that only describe. That makes the feedback actionable: you can see the difference between the two and revise accordingly. We won't tell you a draft is certain to earn a particular mark, because no outside reader can know that, but we will be candid about its strengths and gaps.
Turning feedback into a better draft
Comments are only useful if you know what to do with them. That is why each report ends with a short, ranked list of revisions. A typical list might read: sharpen the thesis in the introduction so it names your two main factors; merge paragraphs four and five, which make the same point; add one counterargument before the conclusion; fix the inconsistent date format in your reference list.
If a comment is unclear, ask. A follow-up call or a few written replies are included so you can test your revision ideas before committing to them. Students who want ongoing support across several drafts often move to one-to-one essay coaching instead.
Sending your draft and turnaround times
Upload your essay, the question, the marking criteria and the deadline through our quote form. Word documents work best because we can comment directly in the margins, but Google Docs and PDFs are fine. Standard turnaround for an essay of up to 3,000 words is two to three working days; shorter windows are often possible if you mention them when you get in touch.
Your draft is read only by the reviewer assigned to it. We don't store essays in any database, share them or reuse them, and we delete files on request once the work is complete.
Feedback that keeps the work yours
A review is the academic equivalent of a colleague reading your work before it goes out. It is the kind of support universities encourage through writing centres and peer feedback, and it leaves authorship exactly where it belongs. We explain what to change and why; the decisions and the sentences are yours. If you also want a grammar pass at the end, we can add a light proofread that follows your institution's editing policy, as described on our academic integrity page.
What you get
- Margin comments on your document, tied to specific sentences and paragraphs
- A one-to-two page feedback report organised by your marking criteria
- An indication of where the draft currently sits against each criterion, with the reasoning shown
- A prioritised list of the three to five revisions that would matter most
- Notes on referencing accuracy and consistency
- An optional 30-minute call to talk the feedback through
What we don't do
- Rewritten passages: we comment and explain, and you make the revisions, so the improved essay is still your work
- An official mark; our reading of the criteria is informed, but your own marker has the final say
- Sentence-by-sentence correction throughout, which our proofreading or essay editing service covers
