What a PhD coach helps with, year by year
The problems in a doctorate change as it goes on, so coaching changes with it. Most of our PhD clients come to us at one of four points.
- The opening months. You have a broad topic and a lot of reading. We help you narrow it to answerable research questions and turn a vague three-year plan into term-by-term goals.
- Confirmation or upgrade. Your first formal review is approaching. We rehearse the case for your project and tighten the document you will submit.
- The long middle. Data collection, analysis and the slow realisation that chapters do not write themselves. This is where steady sessions matter most.
- The final push. Drafts need to become a thesis. We help you set a submission date, sequence revisions and protect writing time.
Inside a typical coaching session
Sessions run for an hour. You send a short note beforehand: what you did since last time, what got in the way and any pages you want read. Your coach reads them in advance, so the meeting starts with substance rather than catch-up.
We usually spend the first part on the writing itself: whether an argument holds, where a section loses the reader, what a chapter is really for. The second part is planning. Together we set the next two or three weeks of work in units small enough to finish. Within a day you receive a written summary so nothing discussed gets lost.
Many students find that knowing a session is booked for Thursday is the reason the paragraphs get written on Tuesday. That isn't a trick; it is how most productive academics work, and coaching for PhD students simply makes it available to you.
Situations we see often
Some patterns come up again and again in doctoral coaching and mentoring.
- Writing only when inspired. We replace it with short, protected writing blocks and a weekly word or page target you set yourself.
- Reading without end. We help you decide when the literature is enough to start drafting, then return to it with a purpose.
- Mixed signals from supervisors. We help you summarise feedback, spot conflicts between advisors and prepare clear questions for your next meeting.
- Analysis paralysis. If your method or statistics are the bottleneck, we bring in a specialist from our dissertation statistics help team for a focused session.
- Returning after a break. We audit what exists, decide what is still usable and build a realistic route to completion.
Choosing a rhythm that suits you
There is no single right frequency. We agree one at the start and review it every few months.
| Rhythm | Works well for |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Final-year writing, tight deadlines, rebuilding a habit |
| Fortnightly | The long middle of the doctorate, steady progress |
| Monthly | Early-stage planning or light-touch accountability |
| Short block (4–6 sessions) | A specific milestone such as confirmation or submission |
To start, send us your field, your stage, your expected submission date and what is currently hardest. We reply with a free quote and a suggested rhythm, usually within a few hours.
Why we coach rather than write
A doctorate certifies that you can conduct and report independent research. A writing coach can sharpen how you think and work, but the thesis has to be yours in every sense, or the qualification means nothing and the viva becomes a risk. Our approach is set out on our academic integrity page.
There is a practical upside too. The habits built in coaching, such as planning in small units, asking better questions of feedback and drafting before you feel ready, stay with you into postdoctoral work, grant writing and publishing.
What you get
- Scheduled video sessions with the same coach each time
- A written action plan after every session, with dated next steps
- Margin comments on the draft pages you bring to each meeting
- A project map breaking the remaining doctorate into realistic milestones
- Preparation notes before supervisor or committee meetings
- Short check-ins by message between sessions, if you want them
What we don't do
- We don't write chapters or sections; every page of the thesis is drafted by you
- Coaching sits alongside your supervisor's role and never replaces their academic judgement
- We aren't a counselling service, though we'll gently point you to support if stress becomes more than workload
